Hey y’all! My story in the world of cycling truly kicked off when I was just seven years old. It was my birthday, and my older sisters gifted me something unforgettable—a blue Schwinn Stingray (not quite the same as the above photo but close). I was pumped, to say the least. It had a white banana seat with a medium-high frame on the back. That bike wasn’t just a gift; it was the beginning of a lifelong passion for biking.

Back in 1969, riding wheelies became my thing. I got so good that I could ride on one tire for a full city block, hands-free! Jumping over ditches and building my own jump ramps to fly through the air was the ultimate thrill. Those early days of biking set the foundation for everything that came after.

As I grew older, the biking landscape continued to evolve. By 1978, the summer of my sophomore year in high school, my adventures expanded. My buddy and I strapped our camping gear onto my pale yellow Raleigh 10-speed bike and we embarked on a 200-mile journey, 100 miles each day, to camp on the South Branch of the Au Sable River for two weeks. Looking back, it’s wild to think my mom let us take off like that at that age!

Bikes then were so different from what we have today. The evolution we’ve witnessed is phenomenal. I bet Baron Karl von Drais, the inventor of the bicycle, would’ve been fascinated by today’s biking innovations. Electric bikes, in particular, have revolutionized how we think about transportation and commuting.
